Talk by academic and Philippine foreign policy expert Richard Heydarian
Richard will be speaking about the Philippines’ foreign policy under the Marcos administration and the challenges and opportunities for international engagement, including relations with New Zealand.
This event is hosted by the University of Auckland Public Policy Institute with the support of the Asia New Zealand Foundation.
Richard Heydarian is a Manila-based academic, columnist and author. He is a senior lecturer at the University of the Philippines. Richard has delivered lectures and talks at Harvard, Stanford, Johns Hopkins and Columbia universities. He has advised top government officials, presidential candidates, civil society groups, as well as investment groups, including Deutsche Bank, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs. Richard has written for the world’s leading publications, including the New York Times, Washington Post, the Guardian, Foreign Affairs, and is a regular contributor to Aljazeera English, Nikkei Asian Review, South China Morning Post and the Straits Times.
His latest books include Asia’s New Battlefield (Zed, 2015), The Rise of Duterte: A Populist Revolt against Elite Democracy (Palgrave Macmillan, 2017) and The Indo-Pacific: Trump, China and the New Global Struggle for Mastery (Palgrave Macmillan, 2019). He is also a regular contributor to leading global think tanks such as Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Brookings Institution, and Council on Foreign Relations.
